How to Write an Instagram Bio That Converts (The 4-Line Formula)

Every follower you'll ever get does the same thing first: they tap your profile and spend under 3 seconds deciding. Your bio is that decision. And most bios waste it on vague vibes ("living life ✨") that answer none of the visitor's actual questions.

Here's the formula that consistently converts — and exactly how to build it in 150 characters.

The 4-line formula

Line 1 — Who you help / what you do. Not your job title; the outcome you create. "Helping busy dads get strong at home" beats "fitness enthusiast."

Line 2 — Proof or personality. A number, a credential, or one line of genuine voice. "500+ clients coached" or "chai > coffee, fight me."

Line 3 — What they get by following. The content promise. "New home workout every Monday" tells a visitor exactly what the follow button buys them.

Line 4 — Call to action pointing at your link. "Free workout plan ⬇️" with the link right below is the highest-converting pattern on the platform.

The mechanics most people get wrong

Line breaks disappear. Write your bio in a notes app, then paste into the Instagram mobile app. If a blank line gets stripped, put an invisible character on it — Instagram keeps it.

The name field is searchable — the username isn't enough. Your @handle plus your Name field are the only searchable text on your profile. Put your niche keyword there: "Priya | Home Workouts" is findable; "Priya ✨" is not.

Fancy fonts: garnish, not the meal. A styled word can add personality, but screen readers struggle with Unicode-styled text and search can't index it. Style one word, keep the rest plain.
